On consecutive days in early December Hi-4 has been invited to two Santa Claus themed community and Charity events. Time: December 5th Approx 10AM to 1PM with the possibility of additional volunteering. Place: Secuacus NJFor: Secuacus Kiwanis Club/Township of SecaucusWe've been requested to join Santa Claus in the Secaucus Christmas celebration. This is a new event for Hi-4 but I believe it's mostly an open air event. I do not know the exact size or scale but it must have been a big thing at one time because Santa used to arrive on a helicopter. This year there will be a horse drawn trolley and some of us will be riding with him. A break/changing area has been arranged and I will be driving a carpool over from the New York City. There's also a train you can catch and I can shuttle anyone from the Secaucus train station to the event site. After the Christmas Celebration we might be following Santa to cheer up a local children's hospital.
Time: December 6th Approx 9:30AM to 11AM Place: Uniondale NY, (East Long Island)For: United Cerebral Palsy Association of NassauDue to budget restructuring most of Hi-4's usual UCPN volunteer dates have been canceled this year but we still have this year's Breakfast with Santa event. This indoor event held in a nice hotel conference room attracts a crowd of parents with young, enthusiastic kids. It's a nice, easy-to-perform event with very good, very convenient accommodations. I will also be driving a carpool from New York City for this event. |

Lowlife ghetto-trash
This city is full of such disgusting self-centered people. I decided to stop off in Manhattan to pick some picture hangars up for my apartment, I head to the F/V train for the ride back. The V pulls up and even though it's a longer ride, I bought a sandwich so I figure it'll give me time to just sit back and eat and since the train isn't crowded I can definitely get a seat. So a few stops go by and these four people get on, a young boy, a child of maybe six (couldn't tell if it was a boy or girl), a woman, and what I first thought was a man but then from the conversation found it was a woman (dressed like a real obnoxious rapper, pants hanging below the ass, lots of leather, bandanna and wide brimmed hat...). Before the doors close the small child starts the pee-pee dance, the woman tries to get them to get off the train (assuming to find a bathroom for the kid) but the manly woman refuses and so they watch the doors close. Then the child says he (gonna assume a he) really has to pee, so the manly woman starts telling the kid to pee right there by the door of the train while we're moving. Has the kid face the door and pull down his pants, then starts this insistent "Let it out. Let it out. Let it out." Meanwhile the other woman starts telling the kid not to do it, for the other woman to "stop playin'" and then starts to threaten to smack the kid if he does pee. The manly-woman yells to this other woman (who I think they were sisters, or at least family of some sort) that the kid needs to pee so he's going to pee, then starts the whole 'let it out' again. They don't get off at the next stop, even though the woman tries to say it would be better to pee in the station than on the train, the manly woman argues "But you said we have to stay on the train a couple more stops, I ain't gettin' off!" Quite a bit of back and forth, with the manly woman taking the position that the child's needs override any of those from the people around them (the train wasn't packed but it was close to full a stop after they got on), that I guess the fact that they didn't address this sooner overrides any concerns over hygiene or decency or what have you - the kid had to pee and that was that. The boy who was with them a couple times says almost to himself, "I wish we had a bottle!" Oh and before you say, well at least one of them knew it was wrong - that woman at no point used the argument that there were other people on the train who would have to deal with a stream of piss contaminating the floor around them. No, all she did was say "don't do it," wouldn't you fucking think a better argument against pissing on the train could be made? Throughout all of this I'm just staring at them from my seat, luckily opposite the door they're at. Finally, I think the fourth stop from where they got on, they get off. They go to the wall right by some stairs and it's clear the kid is attempting to pee on the wall. Before the doors close I see a couple people walking past them with a "What the hell are they doing look?" on their faces. The manly woman gets this angry tone and says something like, "You don't want to see then don't look!" I mean, what kind of sick fucking self-centered asshole thinks like this? Excuse me you piece of shit, your child's need to pee does not give you the right to piss in public. Take your fucking kid off the train and to a bathroom - it's that fucking simple. Or have him piss his pants, at least that'll soak up some of it. I kept thinking to myself, if they piss in the train I'm going to yell "What the fuck?!?" but looking at the mother, I think it'd start a ruckus... at least she had her pants down so I could get her off balance. Oh, and I should also state that most people were trying their hardest not to pay attention to any of this going on right by the freakin' train doors - despite the fact that there were a few people sitting in the seats that would probably be splattered by piss had the kid listened to the moron egging him on. Seriously, what is wrong with people??? Current Mood: pissed off |

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!
Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP. Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!! Thanks mhwest and dnewhall for helping out! --- On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice. Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials. We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait! As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work. |

Guess which book I am currently reading...
... based on the below passage. First correct answer gets a virtual gold star! " For an appetizer I ordered radicchio with some kind of free-range squid. Anne and Scott both had the monkfish ragout with violets. Courtney almost fell asleep when she had to exert the energy to read the menu, but before she slid off her chair I grabbed both shoulders, propping her up, and Anne ordered for her, something simple and light like Cajun popcorn perhaps, which wasn't on the menu but since Anne knows Noj, the chef, he made up a special little batch... just for Courtney! Scott and Anne insisted that we all order some kind of blackened medium-rare redfish, a Deck Chairs specialty which was, luckily for them, an entree on one of the mock menus that Jean made up for me. If it hadn't, and if they nevertheless insisted on my ordering it, the odds were pretty good that after dinner tonight I would have broken into Scott and Anne's studio at around two this morning - after Late Night with David Letterman - and with an ax chopped them to pieces, first making Anne watch Scott bleed to death from gaping chest wounds, and then I would have found a way to get to Exeter where I would pour a bottle of acid all over their son's slanty-eyed zipperhead face. Our waitress is a little hardbody who is wearing gold faux-pearl tasseled lizard sling-back pumps. I forgot to return my videotapes to the store tonight and I curse myself silently while Scott orders two large bottles of San Pellegrino." |

Speaking Platform
Wow. It's been a while since I entered anything on here. For some reason, I find myself with a little extra time tonight, possibly because I'm not playing platformers that suck up all my focus. I've finished Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days, Psychonauts and the first two Ratchet and Clanks since the last entry. I'm finding that I really do enjoy platformers more than I thought I would and I'm looking forward to when I can start the PS3 Ratchet and Clanks. Of course, the Ratchet and Clank games are also run and gun types so all the explosions are good as well. I've been trying a few demos of different genres as well to see what other games I would like. Resistance: Fall of Man and Uncharted don't seem to do it for me. I keep dying and I guess I want to be way too accurate for these games when I'm gunning things down. I keep trying to accurately aim my shots, but the enemies keep killing me when I do so. I guess I'm not that kind of gamer yet. I guess my reaction times need to improve because I mostly RPG when I do my vidgame fix. It doesn't help that the Ratchet and Clank weapons tend to be so overpowered I cackle with insane glee when I get a new one. |

Soon to be back to cold weather
So I'm sitting at this hotel lobby computer probably for the last time before catching my flight, tomorrow at 6am. I got the news Friday morning from my mom of my grandfather's passing, got everything ready and arrived at my parent's house that night and we caught the flight saturday afternoon - arriving that night. Sunday we spent most of the day at my grandmother's house and then that night we ate at the Oyster Bar. This is a bit of deja vu because we visited this area of Florida back in May for my grandmother's birthday, stayed at the same hotel, ate at the same restaurant. I wanted to take pics of most of the weekend, I'll edit this post tomorrow when I get home to add some photos. After we departed I managed to talk my family into going to a movie, finally got to see WTWTA. And then today there was a bit of a service around lunch time at the main compound area of Alligator Park, where my grandmother is living (a lot of retirees living there). Some nice words said by some neighbors then a lot of good food. We did some swimming in the local pool (which is a world better than our hotel pool - this one is actually warm, and uses salt rather than chlorine). Back at the house we ate some leftovers for dinner, stayed and chatted for a bit and then headed out. I wanted to play some mini-golf at a place we passed the night before, a couple drops of rain feel when we got out of the car - when we were about to pay it started to really come down so we skipped it and headed over to the movie theater again. When we got there... completely dry outside, no rain at all. Wanted to see Zombieland but already started fifteen minutes before we arrived - ended up seeing Men Who Stare At Goats. And now back and all packed for tomorrow. I and my sister will be flying back, drive to the train station and she'll drive the rest of the way home - parents will be driving my sister's new used car home. I'll be more available for chatting when I get home. |

December 5th. Holiday Event in Secaucus.
Hi-4 has been invited to a new event on the 5th of December. My Contact with the Kiwanis Club called me and we have a new event on the fifth, a community Christmas festival in Secaucus. We will be riding into town on horse trolley with Santa Claus before mingling and entertaining. The event starts at 9 but my contact said we should probably arrive a bit later, around ten. This seems to be a pretty major event and we could probably use a large compliment of performers. The event ends at 1PM but me might be tagging along with Santa for a visit to a children's hospital afterward. Please reply soon so I can start planning. |
