Writer's Block: You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch!

Are there any classic holiday movies or TV shows that you look forward to watching year after year? What are your all-time favorites? Are there any you simply can't stand?

I like the orginal grinch that stole christmas, and most versions of a christmas carol (for the ghosts of course) and any horror movie with a yultide theme, garfield's christmas special was good too

most chaunnka specials are ok too

most specials I am neutral about, so I don't really watch or care about them

but I HATE!!!!! a christmas story, I wanted to kill everyone in that movie for being douches. I don't like its a wonderful life either cause its so sappy and I don't do saccrine sweet except for diet dr pepper. I know this makes me sound heartless but movies that make me mad or sad too much don't do me any favors ok, life does that to me enough at times as is *is very thin skinned*

    Hit-Girl
Okay, first off - how many people have read the comic Kick-Ass? Or know that it'll be coming out as a movie April next year? To give you a heads up, well first off there's one issue remaining... which I hope is released friggin' soon, but anyways it's a pretty damn violent comic and the movie doesn't look to change that too much... well, actually I'm sure there was a lot more blood and guts in the comic but whatever. It's about a normal kid who is a complete geek, loves his comics and superheroes, and one day starts playing superhero. After months of just wearing the costume and staring at things from a distance he finally gets involved. I won't say more because it pretty much gives away the story after that point.

However, it the premise starts off as normal people playing superhero but in the comic it begins to get... a bit over the top, especially with the character shown below. Now watch this trailer which shows one of the more colorful characters from the comic book and tell me if this reflects the whole 'normal person playing superhero.' I'll tell you that it is even more over the top compared to the source material from the looks of this trailer.

Almost feels like you're watching something like Wanted, right? I know I know, same guy who wrote Wanted wrote this - but he didn't have her doing that in the comic! A little spoiler, Hit-Girl doesn't really use guns in the comic. Also, she's a bit more nonchalant in the series - that above 'cunt' line feels a little too forced - while in the comic you could almost hear a little girl's voice saying it mockingly - not this almost Dirty Harry attempt.

I won't knock it more because I will be seeing this when it comes out but oh how I wish it looked like she was more like this...

Oh, but Nicholas Cage looks more like the comic book character should have... after finding out some info near the end of the series. Shhh, I won't say more.

the real problem with every system that could have worked but didn't
I've noticed that people tend to blame a system for something going wrong, and try to get it fixed or a new system put in. Now this is only for things like economic and governments btw, so don't get ahead of me here. Honestly though, the problem isn't always a flawed system, its the people in it

our system of government should work, but we have so many morons in it that it falls flat, and its been like that for a long time, and this goes for BOTH parties, dems and reps need to get the act together fast

wonder why people don't think of things like this in the first place

Yorkshire vicar advises hard-pressed parishioners to shoplift

""I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices."

a story on manners feminism and how to win no matter what
a post in big steve's journal reminded me of this story my college english teacher told us about change views

in a college there where two professers, one was a modern chivrious male and one a feminist female, now the male would do things for everyone, hold doors and that sort of thing, he woman in question, would get annoyed, saying it was degrating to her rights when he did that and kept asking the man to knock it off

now one day instead of holding the elevator for the woman the man just let her try and catch it herself, (sidenote: I half expected her to complain that he didn't hold the elevator but let me finish the tale) well she did make it and said to the male "well I see you finally got the message, thank you for let me be independant" to which the male says "a gentlemen always grants a ladies request"

moral of the story "if you don't want people to be polite, be prepared to be beaten with kindness" or "just shut up and deal with the fact some people have manners"

    Seriously... wtf?
Editing this post to add this additional article - which states in a much less partisan fashion what the original post (under the lj-cut) also states:

Reid Bill Says Future Congresses Cannot Repeal Parts of Reid Bill
Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) pointed out some rather astounding language in the Senate health care bill during floor remarks tonight. First, he noted that there are a number of changes to Senate rules in the bill--and it's supposed to take a 2/3 vote to change the rules. And then he pointed out that the Reid bill declares on page 1020 that the Independent Medicare Advisory Board cannot be repealed by future Congresses:

    ...

According to page 1001 of the Reid bill, the purpose of the Independent Medical Advisory Board is to "reduce the per capita rate of growth in Medicare spending." For any fearmongers out there tempted to call an unelected body that recommends Medicare cuts a "Death Panel," let me be clear. According to page 1004, IMAB proposals "shall not include any recommendation to ration health care"--you know, just like the bill says there's no funding for abortion.

Paging Sarah Palin: the death panel is unkillable.

Update: A friend suggests that Congress could kill IMAB by refusing to fund it. So much for zombie death panels, I guess, for now. Also, the Senate could change the rules to rule repealing or amending IMAB in order. But that would take a 2/3 majority. The Democrats aren't playing by the rules; they may be violating the Constitution.

And as mentioned above, the original text I copied from Red State and posted last night.

    AT&T Worldnet shutting down
Does anyone else still use AT&T Worldnet? I still have them for the 6 email boxes to help sort my email but the service is shutting down.

How do you handle email from mailing lists and such?
What client will gather email from multiple sources and display them in a useful way (not just by time arrived)?

    Holiday Lunch
Management treated us to a nice lunch today at Harry's Italian. Never been there before but it was pretty decent, though the portions could be a little larger (Chicken Parm which doesn't come with spaghetti? And no side orders listed on the menu? Strange). We were counting on getting dessert back at the office for this much hyped off afternoon Holiday Refreshment thing, so we skipped getting anything after we finished with the meal - mistake. The refreshment thing was extremely lame, though at least I guess they did something.

They handed out water bottles with our new company name earlier, looks like mutagen canister from TMNT - though blue :P

    Off the Grid
Well, it's been a while since I did anything with social networking or blogging for a while. For that I apologize. Things have been busier than I would like and while one of the things that kept me busy for the past few weeks has been resolved I'm heading into another situation where my net contact with people is going to be severely diminished. Mostly, it's the writing of papers, which I hate. At least with tests I'm free to forget the knowledge after the test is over.

Add to this the fact that my computer has been acting very screwy over the past few days and you've got a recipe for hair pulling frustration.

    (A little later...)

And now my main computer appears to be completely hosed. Wonderful. I'm using a temporary computer while I try to figure out what the hell I'm going to do to fix this. Hopefully, I can transfer everything that's on the hard drive. I'm going to be tense for the next few days then while I try to recover not only everything that I've saved so far, but also the papers that are due. Yay.

So, I'm only going to be able to go back about a week's worth of entries. I'm hoping that after that I'll be able to keep up with everyone a little bit better.
